Mount Merapi

Mount Merapi (the peak height of 2968 m above sea level, per 2006) is a volcano in central Java and is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. The slopes the south side are in the administrative of Sleman district, Yogyakarta and the rest are in the area of Central Java Province. Magelang District on the west side, Boyolali district on the north and east, and Klaten district in the southeast. Forest area around the peak to be Mount Merapi National Park area since 2004.

  
This mountain is very dangerous because, according to modern records have erupted (peak activity) every two to five yearly and is surrounded by very intensive settlements. Since 1548, this mountain has erupted about 68 times. Magelang and Yogyakarta City is the nearest large town which is under 30 km from the summit. On the slopes there is still a settlement to an altitude of 1700 m and is just four km from the summit. Because of this interest rate, Merapi became one of sixteen volcanoes of the world which included in the Decade Volcano Project


However Mount Merapi which is famous for mountain hiking because this mountain which is very fascinating. The most common route is through the side and near north of Selo, Boyolali district, Central Java, precisely in the Village Tlogolele. The village is located between Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu. Climbing through Selo took about five hours to the summit.

Another popular path is through the Kaliurang, Pakem district, Sleman, Yogyakarta on the south side. This path is more steep and takes about 6-7 hours to the summit. Another alternative pathway is through the northwest side, starting from Sawangan, Magelang regency, Central Java, and through the south-east side, from the direction of Deles, Kemalang District, Klaten Regency, Central Java.
